North of the centre of Vacov lies the complex of the Church of St. Nicholas. The Neo-Gothic church was built in 1889–1890 to replace the inadequate predecessor church demolished in 1885, and contains historic bells from the 16th century.
Routes and viewpoints
The Spůlka Route leads through Mladíkov, where visitors can see a hexagonal bell tower with an onion dome. The stone Klostermannova rozhledna lookout tower on Javorník dates from 1938; from Vacov, it can be reached via Rohanov and Lhota and offers views of the Šumava Mountains and the interior. A route from Vacov to Javorník passes the listed Rotunda of St. Anthony of Padua, which dates from 1939 and was consecrated on 4 August 1940.
Seasons and traditions
During Masopust 2025, a procession with 42 traditional, cheerful and original masks made its way through Vacov and Vlkonicеs. The Mikulášská pouť in Vacov included market stalls with Mikuláš, devils and two angels. In winter, ski lifts are available for visitors in Vacov. The ski slope in Javorník is groomed and illuminated for popular night skiing.
Culinary delights
Pekárna Vacov is a traditional Šumava foothills bakery. Its most popular and best-selling products include the “Šumava” and “Žitovec” breads made from traditionally maintained rye sourdough.
