The defining landscape feature of Staňkov is the Staňkovský rybník pond. The village lies below its high dam; the 18-metre-high structure is known as the “highest pond dam in the Czech Republic”.

Water and landscape

Staňkovský rybník is a popular destination for summer recreation, family holidays, fishing and swimming. Rybářství Třeboň operates recreational and sport fishing on the water; paddleboard and boat rentals are also available. From Staňkov, Staňkovský rybník can be reached by car or bicycle.

Nature

The Rašeliniště Pele Nature Reserve is a protected peat bog at an early stage of development. It lies partly within the cadastral area of Staňkov and is considered unusual within the peat-rich Třeboň Basin. The area contains floating mats of peat moss with round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) and a large population of lesser bladderwort (Utricularia minor). Rašeliniště Pele also provides a habitat for the noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) and the dragonfly species Leucorrhinia rubicunda. The nature reserve is accessible to the public via a forest track from the Pele settlement.

History and culture

Historical local crafts in Staňkov included pottery, brickmaking, the production of wooden shingles and, in particular, the burning of wood tar in several kilns. Staňkovský rybník may have been built by Mikuláš Ruthart between 1551 and 1559 on the former border stream Hostice.

In the direction from Staňkov to Chlum u Třeboně, there are smaller Baroque wayside shrines. Their pedestal bears the year “1820”, probably carved in later; the shrines belong to the type with Tuscan columns. A recurring cultural event, the Na břehu festival has been held every year on the last weekend of July since its first edition in 2021.

Cycle routes

The CT1014 cycle route runs from Chlum u Třeboně through Staňkov; swimming is possible at Staňkovský rybník. The CT322 cycle route leads from the edge of Staňkov towards Smírčí vrch and onwards to Dolní pstruhový rybník.
