Lety: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In 2024, a new Holocaust memorial for Roma and Sinti in Bohemia was established in Lety. The memorial site includes the Pietní kruh, exhibitions, and Paths of Remembrance.

Commemoration and Exhibition

The Pietní kruh is the central element of the memorial site and bears the names of 1,294 registered people who were forced to endure inhumane conditions in the local so-called “Gypsy camp.” The individual metal supports display the prisoners’ full names, dates and places of birth, the period they were detained in the camp, and their individual fates.

The indoor exhibition is arranged around four glass columns containing historical objects and includes a circular interactive timeline. It also features 16 information points with audiovisual content activated through visitor interaction.

Paths of Remembrance

The educational trail “Lety u Písku – A Journey through the Landscape of Memory” leads through a landscape connected with the tragic fate of Roma and Sinti during the Second World War and includes ten stops. It is approximately 3 km long; the recommended walking time is 1.5 to 2 hours.

The Stezka paměti is an open-air exhibition with eight stops featuring audio recordings, images, and texts. Its circular route bears the names of all the prisoners and symbolises a place of remembrance and silence.

Memorial Site and Outdoor Area

The outdoor area of the memorial site includes the emergency cemetery near the Lety cultural monument. Part of the grounds of the Lety cultural monument was declared a national cultural monument in 1998. The outdoor area of the memorial site is accessible year-round, provided that the visitor regulations are observed. At the torture post of the Lety memorial site, a hanging silhouette of figures designed according to a concept by Luboš Mazl commemorates the suffering.
