Katovice: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

On the right bank of the Otava River in Katovice are so-called Sejpy, remnants of gold panning.

Culture and History

The stone pillory of Katovice stands in the square between the church and the municipal office. It originally stood in front of the church’s south portal. It was a symbol of municipal judicial authority and a place of public punishment, disgrace, and humiliation; heritage protection applies exclusively to the pillory itself.

An Early Gothic portal has been preserved on the south side of the Church of St. James and St. Philip. The Church of St. Philip and St. James was originally an Early Gothic church from the 13th century. It was rebuilt in the 14th century and again in 1580–1582, and was given a Baroque makeover in 1761. Services are held in the Church of St. Philip and St. James on Sundays at 8:30 a.m. and Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m.

Near the bridge, the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk is one of Katovice’s immovable cultural monuments. In the cemetery, a mass grave of the victims of a death march is part of Katovice’s registered cultural heritage. The memorial stone has stood in the center of Katovice since 1972; it originally stood below Kněží hora on the left bank of the Otava. The original water mill building is considered architecturally interesting in Katovice. The station building at Katovice railway station is listed as an architecturally interesting structure.

Nature and Trails

Along the Otava, riverside paths for pedestrians are connected between Strakonice and Sušice. Katovice also has a north–south connection for pedestrians and cyclists, which crosses the Otava via a new footbridge and connects to public amenities.

The Kněží hora Nature Reserve covers 13.51 hectares of thermophilous oak woodland with preserved forest flora. In the 9th century, an elliptical Slavic hillfort with a total area of approximately 8 hectares stood on Kněží hora. The Kněží hora hillfort is designated as a currently protected archaeological feature; up to four ramparts can still be seen in places.

The Kněží hora educational trail begins at Husovo náměstí in Katovice and ends in Horní Poříčí at the Březový potok trail junction at the foot of Katovická hora. It has five information stations and focuses on history and nature. In Katovice, the Kemp Katovice – Otavský ráj campsite is located behind the first weir.

Events

Katovické Vinohraní reached its tenth edition in 2025. At Katovické Vinohraní, visitors could taste wine from the Helena, Suský, and Turek wineries in Velké Pavlovice. Katovický Otesánek was held for the ninth time in 2023; it included a creative workshop for children featuring ceramic crafts.
