Hájek U Bavorova: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Hájek is a small South Bohemian municipality on a gentle slope. The village has a preserved townscape and a varied landscape; historic sites can be found in the surrounding area.

Townscape and History

The preserved townscape of Hájek reflects the Baroque-influenced form of South Bohemian farmsteads. Extensive, well-preserved farmsteads, farmyards, and barns are still present today. The buildings are arranged compactly around a spacious village square, which opens onto a broad row of houses along the road.

Around 90 % of the settlement structure retains its original layout from the period of the medieval foundation. The local economy was also predominantly agricultural.

Landscape

The hilly landscape around Hájek forms a transition between the rolling foothills of the Bohemian Forest and the flat landscape of the České Budějovice Basin. It includes a relatively unspoiled landscape setting with harmoniously arranged settlement areas, fields, meadows, and forests.

A large forest lies west of Hájek and occupies a significant part of the municipality. The highest peak of Hájek is also named Hájek and reaches an elevation of 588 m above sea level.

Location and Routes

Hájek lies about 150 m to the right of the road from Bavorov to Prachatice. Buses can also be taken from the intersection near Hájek. Marked cycling route 1075 also passes through the village.

Culture

Bavorov is located in the immediate vicinity of Hájek. The historic town center of Bavorov is designated as an urban heritage zone; Bavorov is less than 2 km from Hájek.

Helfenburk, a Gothic castle ruin from the 14th century in the forests between Bavorov and Volyně, is located near Hájek. Helfenburk has been open to the public since the 20th century.

At Helfenburk, there is a free car park on a meadow below the ruin, less than 1 km from the ruin. A well-maintained paved forest road leads to the site. Subject to prior arrangement, it is possible to spend the night in the Helfenburk castle courtyard under a dedicated shelter, provided that the established rules are observed.
