Culture and History

In Kalenice, the originally Gothic Hvížďalka Fortress, house number 50, has been preserved as a listed monument together with its rampart. Its medieval core was rebuilt during the Renaissance and conquered and burned down around 1530. Today, the fortress stands in Kalenice castle park as a single-storey building with a rectangular floor plan and a half-hipped gable roof.

The late Gothic tower fortress has a barrel-vaulted cellar and a ground floor. It was surrounded by a moat with a rampart and an outer ditch; remnants of the fortifications have been preserved on the eastern, southern and western sides.

Upon request, pre-arranged tours of the immediate surroundings of Hvížďalka Fortress, the Gothic cellar and part of the gradually reconstructed interior are possible on weekends from April to September. In exceptional cases, other months or weekdays are also possible by prior arrangement.

The chapel dedicated to Saint Francis stands in Kalenice village square. It was built in 1832 on the site of an older wooden church. Kalenice is first mentioned in 1045 in a deed of donation issued by Prince Břetislav I to Břevnov Monastery.

Cycle Routes

The 10.1-km “Za Kladrubským drakem” cycle route and the 12.8-km “Krajem rybníků” cycle route pass through Kalenice.

On the “Za dávných časů a jejich časoměření” cycle route, the first station when coming from Horažďovice is in Kalenice, by the local fortress.

Dubičí Hill [Kejnice] is located in the immediate surroundings of Kalenice. The surrounding area also includes Sedlo Mountain [Sušice-Albrechtice] and Vysoký Mountain. In the wider regional area are Svatobor Mountain and the Radomysl Mediumwave Radio Mast ruins.
