On the village square in Chelčice, the memorial to Petr Chelčický is housed in a medieval barn reconstructed for this purpose. The ground floor contains a regional exhibition about the Chelčicko area and the Libějovicko-Lomecko heritage conservation zone.
Culture and History
A visit to the memorial to Petr Chelčický must be arranged by telephone several days in advance. The historic village setting also includes St. Martin’s Church, a late Romanesque church dating from around 1240. Its original Romanesque portal has been preserved on the south side. The church is accessible during the regular Sunday services held from 11 a.m.; by prior arrangement at the neighbouring Domov svatého Linharta, it can also be visited together with the exhibition on Petr Chelčický.
The Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene is an early Baroque hexagonal chapel built between 1660 and 1663 and remodelled between 1687 and 1710. During the pilgrimage to St. Mary Magdalene, a pilgrimage mass was held in St. Martin’s Church, followed by a traditional gathering in the natural garden of Chelčický domov sv. Linharta.
The Svatojánské slavnosti are also among the documented events in Chelčice. They took place on Friday, 19 June 2026, at Chelčický domov sv. Linharta in Chelčice and were a celebration of the solstice, summer, herbs and fire.
Nature and Garden
The natural garden of Chelčický domov sv. Linharta has held the “Přírodní zahrada” certificate since July 2012 and includes vegetable beds, fruit trees, an insect hotel and various herbs. The garden also offers a therapeutic path and seating areas for recreation and relaxation.
For many years, the natural garden in Chelčice has taken part in the Open Gardens Weekend, held on the second weekend of June. During the Open Gardens Weekend in the natural garden of Chelčický domov sv. Linharta, there were guided tours with commentary on aromatherapy and herbalism, a workshop on glazing ceramics, and the opportunity to sit informally in the garden.
