Castle history in several building phases

The Czech nobleman Jan Bohuchval z Hrádku lived in Nemilkov. At the end of the 16th century, he converted part of the fortress into a Renaissance chateau with a farmyard. The change from fortress to chateau does not describe a complete new build, but the transformation of part of the complex. The farmyard was also part of this renovation. For travellers who like to understand historic places through their development, this distinction is revealing: the Renaissance chateau grew out of an older fortification and has a specific history.

At the end of the 18th century, the castle gained a west wing and a Baroque façade. These additions differ from the earlier Renaissance renovation: a wing was added, and the façade was given a Baroque design. The castle offers a guided tour with commentary covering changes from the Gothic period through to Classicism. The former owners also lend a personal perspective to the castle’s history. The rooms open to visitors include the social and private rooms of the Schreiner family, the former owners. After the Second World War, the family had to leave the castle. A hiking route described by the KČT begins at Nemilkov railway station. It follows the yellow-marked trail towards Makov.
