Hamry Na Šumavě: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

On the educational trail from Hamry to Velký Ostrý, the final fifth of the route is covered along a stony mountain path. The destination is Velký Ostrý, one of the best-known peaks in the Bohemian Forest, at an altitude of 1,293 m.

Nature

The 4 km-long Naučná stezka Úhlavským luhem educational trail provides access to natural areas of the Úhlava floodplain on both banks of the river and is intended exclusively for pedestrians. It begins in Hamry near Kollerův dvůr at a tourist shelter with an information board and map. Five stations focus on the upper Úhlava, its hydrology, the forests, settlement and changes in the landscape. Four boardwalks lead through the wetlands; the educational trail also features beaver tracks and habitats with numerous protected plants and animals.

In the immediate vicinity of Hamry, about 1 km from the village, stands a 250-year-old beech tree.

Trails and Water

A green-marked hiking trail leads from Zadní Hamry after 3 km to the 4.5 km-long Brčálník educational trail. The trail focuses on history and nature and was opened in 2005.

The Bílá Strž National Nature Reserve protects a deeply incised rocky valley of the Bílý potok with numerous steps, rapids and waterfalls, as well as natural forest communities. Bílá Strž is the highest waterfall in the Bohemian Forest, lies in the valley of the Bílý potok at an altitude of 940 m and has a drop of 7 m. There is a viewing terrace at Bílá Strž overlooking the natural landscape.

A blue-marked hiking trail leads from Hamry–Hojsova Stráž railway station through Hamry for 6 km to the Pod Statečekem trail junction. From there, Bílá Strž can be reached via a 1.3 km yellow-marked trail. Bílá Strž can also be reached by bicycle from Špičák or Hamry.

Culture and History

The Church and Way of Our Lady of Sorrows in Hamry house a Baroque image of the Virgin Mary, a folk-style limewood Madonna with the Christ Child, and modern reverse-glass paintings. A green-marked trail leads from Hamry railway station to Zadní Hamry; from the road bridge over the Úhlava, a convenient path then continues to the chapel in Křížkov–Kreutzwinkel. The total distance is approximately 2 km.

The chapel in Křížkov–Kreutzwinkel was founded and built in 1730–1731 by the freeholder Jan Torner near the former road to Železná Ruda in the group of houses known as Křížkov (Kreutzwinkel). The pilgrimage site of Křížkov–Kreutzwinkel was restored in 2007 by the municipality of Hamry together with the Künische Gemeinde Hammern association and the Bavarian municipality of Lam, with support from EU funds.

In the cadastral area of Hamry, about 5 km upstream in the Úhlava valley, there is an old pumped-storage power station with a small reservoir, which has been recognized as a technical monument. The pumped-storage power station began operation in 1930 as the first facility of its kind in Czechoslovakia.

Seasons

In winter, cross-country ski trails also run around the Bílá Strž gorge.
