Libišany: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Libišany combines visible features in the village landscape with archaeological traces and surroundings shaped by wetlands. Between the bell, crosses and village events, very different facets of the village emerge.

Culture and history

The functional bell tower in Libišany has a circular ground plan and a conical roof. A stone cross with a biblical inscription stands in the central village square. A monument in the centre of the village also commemorates those who fell in the First World War: it consists of a granite block and bears a plaque with 30 names. Another stone cross in the cemetery depicts Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary.

A fortified mound with a small bell is all that remains of Libišany Fortress. The fortress is located in the village on the main road and is freely accessible.

Archaeological traces

The pile-dwelling settlement of Na Bahnech is generally attributed to the Funnelbeaker culture and dated to around 3800 to 3500 BC. Excavations at Na Bahnech uncovered traces of this pile-dwelling settlement. It had been built on wooden platforms in a waterlogged area flooded by the Labe.

Landscape and wetlands

The peat deposit of Libišany covers 42.432 hectares and lies in an old riverbed of the Elbe. Protected wet meadows with stands of reeds cover an area of 11.94 hectares in the surroundings of Libišany.

The open, occasionally flooded meadows around Libišany provide habitats for orchids, marsh dandelions and snipes.

Village life and events

The programme of Libišanské posvícení 2026 included craft workshops and ceramics. In 2026, the local community festival was scheduled as the fourth edition at the football pitch in Libišany. The fourth-edition fishing competitions were also scheduled for 13 June 2026 at the Vrškovský municipal pond in Libišany.
