The listed chapel with a bell tower characterizes Vitčice’s village green. The historic village center consists of a triangular village green lined by rows of former agricultural farmsteads.

Culture and History

In 2021, a new hand-carved, five-meter-high wooden monument cross featuring Jesus Christ was erected on Ovčák. The statue of the guardian angel stands at a historic crossroads of important field paths and replaced an earlier wooden statue before 1892. The Vitčice war memorial, unveiled in 1922 and extensively reconstructed in 2009, commemorates those who fell in the First World War. A small ecclesiastical brick building is also a remarkable example of vernacular architecture.

Near Srbce, an image of Saints John and Paul stands at a crossroads of field paths by a stream; it can still be viewed. The wooden cross “Panna Maria in the Forest” is associated with an orally transmitted legend about a poacher and stands at one of the forest’s almost highest points. The Vitčice fortress is first mentioned in 1406, while the last recorded reference to it dates from 1466. The local culture also includes the “Pytlácká noc”, a long-standing Vitčice tradition held at the festival grounds by the forest.

Nature and Trails

Vitčický les is a 97.262-hectare nature reserve, first designated on June 21, 1990. Vitčický rybník is the largest body of water in Vitčice and is home to amphibians and aquatic insects. The wooden cross on Ovčák can be reached from Vitčice via a surfaced field path along the northern edge of the forest; this path is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists.

Viewpoint and Cycling Route

Rozhledna Štátula stands on the southwestern edge of Vitčický les and can be reached via a path along the forest. The wooden observation tower is eight meters high, with its viewing platform six meters above the ground. Rozhledna Štátula was freely accessible year-round.

Cycling route 5084 runs through Vitčice and onward through Vitčický les; an observation tower with panoramic views was built there in connection with the cycling route.
