Stity: Holiday apartments and holiday homes
Štíty combines a historic town centre, which was declared a heritage zone by the Czech Ministry of Culture in 1992, with a location on the edge of the easternmost foothills of the Orlické hory mountains and close to the foothills of the Jeseníky mountains. The Štíty Tourist Information Centre provides, among other things, train and bus timetables.
Culture and history
Štíty probably originated as a small subject town below Šilperk Castle, which stood behind the present-day church. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in 1755 in the late Baroque style and acquired its present domed tower design in 1912.
The historic buildings also include the former town hall, a 16th-century building that formed part of the original development of Štíty’s historic town centre. On the square behind the present-day town hall stands a Marian column dating from 1716, associated with the end of a plague epidemic. On the north side of the church is the Calvary group, an Empire-style sculpture from 1808.
The former prison was also built as early as 1867. The barred cell windows are still visible today; the building is best viewed from the steps near the health centre.
Things to do
The Acrobat Park of Olympic champion Aleš Valenta is a multifunctional sports centre in Štíty that is open to the general public. Regional cycle route 521 runs from Moravská Třebová to Štíty.
Landscape and trails
The Štíty–Na Zámecký vrch walking trail starts in the town square and leads through hilly woodland. Along this trail, the route descends after a steep, lengthy descent through the forest to the road to Jedlí and then to the weir on the Březná.
Hrádek “Na zámku”, also known as Zámecký vrch, was one of three presumed medieval fortifications in the vicinity of Štíty and lies hidden in a shady forest above the Březná.
