Radkovy lies in a gently rolling landscape at the foot of the Hostýn Hills. Between the village character, traces handed down through the generations, and the nearby woodland, a multifaceted picture of a Czech village emerges.

Landscape

The Dřevohostický les area also includes the cadastral territory of Radkovy. It covers 310 hectares; the protected features include extensively mown meadows ranging from the lowlands to the foothills, as well as oak-hornbeam forests. Species-rich Carpathian oak-hornbeam forests grow in Dřevohostický les, including Hacquetia epipactis and Symphytum tuberosum.

Village Character

The original settlement structure of Radkovy has been preserved as a linear village with a widened village square and is classified as an area of urban-planning value. Local landmarks include several historic crosses and statues of saints. These include the stone cross from 1865 next to the Chapel of Saint Dominic, the statue of Saint Joseph from 1948 next to the municipal office building on the village square, the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1900 next to road III/43724, and the statue of the Virgin Mary from 1921 beside the field path towards Bystřice pod Hostýnem. These landmarks are among Radkovy’s locally significant monuments.

History

The Chapel of Saint Dominic in Radkovy was built in 1872. Its bell was hidden during the First World War to prevent its confiscation by the Austrian authorities. Radkovy’s mill, which still exists today, also dates back a long way: it is first mentioned in 1412.

Archaeological finds in the fields around Radkovy and Radkova Lhota indicate that farming communities were already living there around the 5th millennium BC. Archaeological finds from the La Tène culture have also been discovered in the fields around Radkovy and Radkova Lhota. Village traditions also include festivals and events such as the leading of the bear.

Cycling in Radkovy takes place on a network of field and forest paths. The Dřevohostickým lesem nature trail is located nearby. It has 12 information panels about the natural and social conditions of the landscape and includes orienteering exercises using azimuths and maps.
