Village Square: Cross, Bell Tower and Remembrance

The sandstone cross in the village square was funded in 1909 through a community collection. It stands where an earlier wooden cross once stood. Augustin Humplík later placed a fragment of this original cross inside the bell tower. The cross and tower are therefore connected not only by their location but also by history. Visitors to the square can distinguish between the present-day sandstone cross and the preserved fragment of the older wooden one. Check in advance whether the inside of the tower is accessible.

The bell in the tower was confiscated during the Protectorate, taken to Prague and later returned. This is a distinct chapter in the village’s history. The Kozelský family, from house number 12, has been associated with ringing the bell since 1818; this tradition therefore predates the confiscation and return of the current bell. The bell tower’s façade was repaired at the community’s expense in 1999, and its doors were replaced in 2011. These different dates describe the building’s use, loss and preservation, not a single year of construction.

The Masaryk monument features a bust by sculptor Sosna, unveiled on 7 March 1930. Sosna was a student of the Olomouc sculptor Pelikán. The bust gives the village square another historical connection alongside the cross and bell. A short walk can bring together these three themes, but this does not mean that an official tour is offered or that individual buildings are open every day.

Culture and Events in Olšovec

Leisure competitions in volleyball and football take place at the “Rybníček” cultural and sports complex. Dance events and discos are also held there in summer. These may be reasons to visit, but they are not a daily programme. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the current event calendar before booking an apartment for a specific date.

Another part of the local cultural history is the children’s instrumental ensemble Olšoveček. Teacher Jan Kujal founded it in 1993; in 1994, it recorded its first concert for Česká televize Brno. These two years mark a specific development in the local music scene. However, this does not mean that a performance will be taking place during every visit to the village.
