Culture and history

Potštát Castle stands at the end of a flat spur of land built up by the town. It developed from a regularly laid-out Gothic fortress; the major conversion into a castle took place at the beginning of the 17th century.

The historic town centre of Potštát is also characterised by remarkable buildings, including the Church of St Bartholomew. The exhibition on the history of the Potštátsko region offers another insight into the town’s history. The exhibition presents the history of Potštátsko, including its districts and the villages that disappeared within the Libavá Military Training Area, and has been open since April 2014.

The wooden Church of St John the Baptist is located in the Lipná district. It is listed as a cultural monument, is considered the last surviving building of its kind in the Oderské vrchy area, and acquired its present form through a reconstruction in 1746.

Landscape

From Potštát, you can reach the Potštátské skalní město rock city by following the Velička stream. The rock walls there consist of resistant Carboniferous sedimentary rocks; the cliffs are over 20 metres high.

In the steep slopes of the Potštátské skalní město, visitors can see the several-centuries-old Puchart castle ruins. The ruins of Pustý zámek, also known as Puchart, preserve the foundations, remnants of walls, a moat and a rampart of a double castle.

Routes

The Potštát–Boškov cycle path connects the cycle paths from Hranice with the cycle path towards Středolesí and Uhřínov. The Hipostezka na Potštátsku bridleway also passes through Potštát. This route is 31 kilometres long in total and offers two circular routes connecting horse farms, rest areas and horse-tethering points.
