Šumvald: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Šumvald represents the interplay of architectural history, bodies of water, nature and music. Visible evidence ranges from a Gothic parish church and a Baroque statue to a protected chapel in the Břevenec district. At the same time, a large pond, the forests of Sovinecko Nature Park and a route separated from motorised traffic shape the character of the town.

Culture and Personalities

The Church of St Nicholas is listed in the Czech Republic’s state register of immovable cultural monuments in Šumvald. It is a valuable single-nave Gothic church dating from the mid-14th century and was remodelled in 1972. In front of the church stands the highly valuable Baroque statue of St John of Nepomuk, dating from 1725.

In the Břevenec district, the Chapel of St Anthony of Padua has been protected as a cultural monument since 18 July 2007. Šumvald is also associated with the prematurely deceased poet of the Czech National Revival, Aleš Balcárek, as well as with the family of the composer Franz Lehár: his parents came from Šumvald.

Classical music is also part of the town’s cultural life. The Kruh přátel hudby Šumvald organises ten classical music concerts in Šumvald every year.

Ponds and Nature

The large pond and the smaller ponds belonging to it in Šumvald together cover 60 hectares of water surface. The large pond also has a documented history; the oldest record of it dates from 1569.

Paths and Connections

A completed shared pedestrian and cycle path runs between Šumvald and Libina along road II/446. The route is separated from motorised traffic. The Břevenec district is easily accessible by bus from Uničov.
