Opava combines striking buildings, museums, historic sites and routes through the city centre to create a diverse cityscape.

Culture and History

The Co-Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has been listed among the national cultural monuments since 1995. It is the largest church building in Opava and a landmark of Upper Square (Horní náměstí). It is also one of the most important monuments illustrating the typical features of Silesian brick Gothic.

The Expozice Slezsko exhibition presents the nature, history, culture and personalities of Silesia to the public in four sections. The Silesian Museum dates back to the first public museum in the territory of today’s Czech Republic.

Historical sites also include Müllerův dům. It was built in 1726 and was originally part of the grounds of a Liechtenstein château that has since disappeared. The town hall, with its distinctive tower and now known as Hláska, is considered one of Opava’s best-known symbols and a prominent landmark.

The Petr Bezruč Memorial was established during the poet Petr Bezruč’s lifetime and stands on the site of his birthplace.

City Routes and Trees

The tour through the city centre leads to buildings from the Gothic, Baroque and Neo-Renaissance periods, historic corners and attractive parks. In Opava, almost all important destinations are within walking distance.

The Opava Dendrological Educational Trail is a walking route in the city centre that leads through the park ring and provides information about important trees.

Breweries and the Taste of the City

Opavská dvanáctka is a route through Opava where beers from smaller breweries can be sampled.
