Brumovice – Nature, Cycling Routes and History

Brumovice combines nature, cycling connections, water-related attractions and historic buildings. The Hořina Nature Reserve, the numbered routes, Pocheň and the historic ensembles each provide their own focus. Landscape, route layout, recreational area and local history thus stand alongside one another as different ways of exploring the area.

Nature

The Hořina Nature Reserve extends across the cadastral areas of Brumovice u Opavy and Velké Heraltice. It protects wet meadows with an original population of the spring crocus (Crocus heuffelianus). The nature theme therefore brings together a clearly defined geographical extent and a specifically identified plant species.

Cycling

Cycling route No. 55, the “Slezská magistrála”, passes through Brumovice. The Slezská magistrála connects Krnov, Opava and Velké Hoštice. Cycling route No. 6159 leads from the centre of Úblo towards Pocheň and then continues along the slopes of the Ve Smrčí and U Lesovny hills to Úvalno.

The two numbered connections can be distinguished by their links to particular places and their described routes. The Slezská magistrála focuses on the places it connects, while route No. 6159 is described through its starting point, direction, named slopes and destination. The two routes therefore represent different geographical lines: one connects several places, while the other describes a journey from Úblo via Pocheň and the named slopes to Úvalno.

Water and Recreation

Pocheň is a recreational area within the administrative territory of Brumovice. The Pocheň Reservoir is used for recreation. The themes can be understood in terms of the activities described: cycling routes provide route layouts, while the recreational area and reservoir represent the connection with water.

Different forms therefore take centre stage in the overall classification: the nature reserve combines a specific habitat with a named plant species; the cycling routes become tangible through numbers, places and directions; Pocheň describes a place for recreation; and Vartnov and the buildings in the town centre introduce different historical scales. These differences arrange the destinations mentioned according to landscape, route, connection with water and architectural history.

History

The archaeological site of Vartnov lies north of the settlement of Pocheň and south of the Čižina stream. Vartnov is a small medieval fortification from the early 14th century. Remains of the walls are preserved in the eastern part of Vartnov Castle.

At Vartnov, a precise geographical relationship, a date from the early 14th century, its classification as a small fortification and the surviving building remains come together. These features create a different focus from the nature-related and water-related sites.

Culture

The ensemble of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary includes a cemetery, an enclosing wall with gates, a mortuary chapel, a former fire station and a stone cross. In the town centre near the fire station stands a wooden bell tower built on a square plan. The bell tower has an onion-shaped roof covered with slate.

The Church of the Most Holy Redeemer is a prominent landmark of the settlement on the approach from Brumovice. Among the historic sites, the scale shifts between an archaeological fortification, a church ensemble and a single bell tower.
