Culture and History

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a protected heritage site. The complex includes the former cemetery, the enclosing wall with three gates, the main and side stairways, sculptures of Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and the Assumption of Mary, as well as a gravestone. The church tower in Okna also houses a large bell dating from 1594.

The event and sacred landscape also extends beyond the town center: Masopust celebrations were held in Okna in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is located in the wider regional surroundings of Okna.

Hiking Trails and Cycle Routes

Visitors to the library in Okna can use the internet free of charge. Several marked trails run through the town and its surroundings for those out and about. The green hiking trail leads through the built-up part of Okna to the railway station and continues towards Bezděz. The yellow hiking trail begins at Okna railway station and leads towards Žďárský les; at the U Maršů signpost, it connects with the Březínské studánky educational trail.

Okna also has a cycle route used by tourists on their way to the Kokořínsko region. The shorter cycling loop “Na kole Máchovi v patách po stopách zaniklých hradů” passes through Okna and Houska and forms an approximately 25 km loop starting and ending in Doksy.

Landscape in the Surroundings

The broad lowland, with its lowest point at 280.80 m above sea level, is bordered to the east by a panorama of Bezděz Castle. The Okenský stream feeds a system of ponds near Doksy, south of Okna.

The surroundings of Okna are home to the Starý Berštejn ruins and the mountains Berkovský vrch, Malá Buková, Velká Buková, and Lysá.
