Zeleznice: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Železnice shows its historic character particularly clearly in the centre: the historic centre was declared an urban conservation area in 1990. After the great fire of 1826, the town was rebuilt according to plans by the master builder Jan Hertner in a uniform Neoclassical style. A large part of this development has been preserved and forms a unique urban ensemble from the Empire period.

Culture and History

An important landmark in the townscape is the Church of St Giles. It was first mentioned in writing in the 13th century and was remodelled in the Baroque style from 1727 to 1739. Original Romanesque ashlar blocks were used in the tower. The town hall on Svobody Square and the Oldřich-Prášila Mill are also cultural monuments of Železnice.

The history of the town also includes its railway connection: Železnice was connected to the railway network in 1903, when railway operations began on the Jičín–Turnov line.

Museum and Crafts

The Vlastivědné muzeum a galerie v Železnici is housed in an Empire-style house dating from 1816 next to the Church of St Giles. Its archaeology exhibition reaches back to the Neolithic period, while the palaeontology exhibition extends to the Palaeozoic. Another exhibition is dedicated to the Prussian-Austrian Battle of 1866, which took place in the fields near Železnice.

At the Roubená chalupa, visitors can try spinning on a spinning wheel and watch weaving demonstrations. The interior of the cottage is wheelchair accessible; a separate visit can be arranged.

Tours and Activities

The Naučná stezka po městě Železnici is a town trail leading through the settlement and combining numerous questions with a final puzzle. The accompanying brochure is available free of charge at the Kupecký krám in the Vlastivědné muzeum v Železnici. The Kupecký krám also serves as the tourist information centre for Železnice and its surroundings.

The activities offered by Za pověstmi Českého ráje are primarily designed for families with children aged 4 to 8. There is also an educational trail in the Železnice area relating to the Battle of Jičín on 29 June 1866.

Nature and Trails

Železnice lies on the edge of the CHKO Český Ráj and is a starting point for hiking trails. The near and wider surroundings of Železnice also offer routes for cycling tourism.

A planned cycling and pedestrian connection between Valdice and Železnice is intended to run as a shared, illuminated path for pedestrians and cyclists as far as the local road in Těšín.
