Kněžnice: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The cadastral area of Kněžnice extends into the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. North of the village lies the Cidlinský hřeben natural monument, while to the west there are extensive views over large parts of Český ráj, with Trosky Castle as a prominent landmark.

Landscape and nature

Cidlinský hřeben is an important geological locality in the Český ráj UNESCO Geopark. At the same time, it is a protected forest complex with significant herbaceous undergrowth and the largest occurrence of wood ants in the Podkrkonoší region.

Geology and trails

Kněžnice is a good starting point for hikes. The Kozlov geological locality can be reached from the road via a walkable tourist trail. Three lava flows can be observed there; cavities within them contain chalcedony, agates and, in particular, quartz geodes and coloured quartz varieties, with amethyst predominating.

Local history and monuments

The first written mention of Kněžnice dates from 1376 and appears in the court book of the town of Jičín. Monuments of local importance include the statue of the Virgin Mary and the wayside shrines known as “Boží Muka”.

The crucifix on a pedestal is a valuable early Neoclassical stone-carving work from 1801 by an unsigned local stonemason. It stands on the main road through Kněžnice, near the municipal office.

The rural farm complex at Kněžnice No. 66 is a large agricultural farm complex with a three-sided courtyard. It was extensively rebuilt in the late 19th century and illustrates one form of the development of agricultural farm complexes following the abolition of robot labour.
