Staré Hrady: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Staré Hrady combines a Gothic castle incorporating the work of the Parler workshop with an adjoining Renaissance chateau. The historic complex lies in a gently shaped valley in the south of the Bohemian Paradise.

Culture and History

The Staré Hrady castle and chateau complex has a forecourt with preserved figurative sgraffiti. The first written mention of the Stará fortress dates back to 1340.

The tour “What Life Was Like Under Emperor Franz Joseph I” presents many thousands of exhibits relating to the lives of ordinary people, townspeople and the nobility during the heyday of the Habsburg monarchy.

Experiences

The Zámecké pohádkové sklepení is a fairy-tale trail that visitors can explore independently at their own pace. It was designed with sound and light effects in 2021.

The “POHÁDKA II.” tour in the Hradní pohádková půda presents stories about the wizard Archibald I, featuring witches, magical grandmothers, ghosts, little spooky creatures and goblins. In good weather, visitors can also take part in a course on flying a magic broom there.

Zdravosvět a Dračí království offers the educational and entertaining “POHÁDKA III.” tour through the world of health in the chateau rooms. At Čarodějná Bestyjola, witches and magical grandmothers care for live animals; a fairy tale is also told there explaining why the travel carriage is divided.

In the Dračí královská komnata, the dragon king Rozumbraďák XVI. welcomes visitors together with Queen Starostlinda and the dragon princesses Lajdalína, Trajdalína and Rozcaplína.

Local Character

In the oldest part of the castle, visitors can taste Starohradská medovina.
