Skřivany: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Skřivany showcases historical and natural facets that are visible in its buildings, natural monuments and places of remembrance.
Culture and History
The château in Skřivany is protected as an immovable cultural monument under registration number ÚSKP 46918/6-694. Around 1720, the old Renaissance fortress was presumably extensively converted into a Baroque château. In 1867–1868, Gustav Ledvinka had the château completely remodelled in the Windsor Gothic style according to a design by Josef Niklas.
The Church of St Anne in Skřivany was founded in 1720 as the château chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and dedicated to St Anne in 1842. It has been under heritage protection since 22 January 1964.
The wooden hexagonal bell tower in Skřivany is estimated to date from the period after 1720. Following the sugar factory fire in 1905, it was erected behind the road at its present location. It was completely restored in 2004; the following year, it received a newly cast bell.
Landscape
The Cidlina flows along the eastern edge of Skřivany; its riverbed has been partially regulated.
Vrší offers a view over Skřivany and the surrounding area. In good weather, the view extends to the Chlumecké vrchy and the Jičín volcanic hills, with the Krkonoše mountain range in the background.
Places of Remembrance
Vojtěch’s Oak is a more than 400-year-old pedunculate oak on the road from Skřivany to Myštěves, near the forester’s lodge where Dr Václav Vojtěch was born. The tree has a trunk circumference of 690 centimetres and is 27 metres tall. There are benches and information panels beside it; the Dr Václav Vojtěch educational trail runs around it.
A monument to Václav Vojtěch stands in the park in front of the Skřivany municipal office. It commemorates the traveller who, as part of Admiral Byrd’s expedition, became the first Czech to set foot in Antarctica.
