Sloupno: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Castle and History

Around the middle of the 16th century, a new Renaissance fortress was built in Sloupno. It was later expanded in the Baroque style and converted into a château as a Benedictine residence. Today’s Sloupno Château was built after the middle of the 18th century under Abbot Benno I. Löbl as a Benedictine residence serving Břevnov-Broumov Monastery. Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer prepared the design for today’s château in 1748.

Since 1996, Sloupno Château has been gradually and extensively reconstructed. The overall renovation was divided into five stages; a project to save the cultural monument was drawn up, and the property was included in the Czech programme for the preservation of the architectural heritage.

Culture

Jan Amos Comenius is said to have hidden for some time on the Sloupno estate in a Renaissance fortress before going into exile in Poland. A monument to Josef Eduard Proche was erected in front of Sloupno Cemetery in 1958.

A wooden cross still stands today beside a field path leading to Starý Bydžov; it was commissioned by the estate manager Jiří Hovad. The apple variety cultivated in 1894 was named “Libernáč sloupenský”.

Nature

At the eastern edge of Sloupno, the Cidlina River flows in its riverbed known as “Mlýnská Cidlina”. In the area around Sloupno, natural areas with diverse and rare flora and fauna can be found along both banks of the Cidlina along its entire length. The Cidlina River is a destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers.

Events

On 23 November 2025, “Vítání adventu” at Sloupno Château included a Christmas-themed sales exhibition and an Advent concert.
