Nature

The Dubolka natural monument is a neovolcanic hill featuring thermophilous flora. It comprises three hills that bear witness to the ancient volcanic history of the landscape. The basalt peaks rise 20–30 metres above the surrounding terrain.

Culture and History

Samšina is home to the Church of Saint Wenceslas with its bell tower, protected as a cultural monument under ÚSKP number 37589/6-1363. The church is Gothic and dates from the mid-14th century; it was remodelled in the late Baroque style from 1785 to 1787. During this remodelling, the present western presbytery and the sacristy were added.

The bell tower is hexagonal, features late Gothic forms and has a post-and-beam frame construction. Embedded in its bell is a coin of the Margraves of Meissen, Frederick II and William III, who jointly ruled from 1442 to 1445.

The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on Samšina village square in front of the church and is a valuable late Baroque sculptural work. The statue of the Virgin Mary in Samšina is a valuable example of Baroque art in a rural setting. The new school building was completed in 1895.

The Samšina vicarage was created by remodelling a residential building of an original fortress near the church. On the outskirts of Samšina, the Baroque stone reconciliation cross commemorates a fatal historical accident involving a horse. In 1782, a statue of Saint Vincent was erected at the grave of the accident victim commemorated by the reconciliation cross.
