Cholenice is a place with several clearly distinguishable themes: nature, sacred architecture, festival traditions, and local history.
Nature
Kojetín Pond is located in the cadastral area of the municipality of Cholenice. It is part of the eponymous natural monument and the Rožďalovické rybníky Natura 2000 bird protection area (SPA, CZ20211010), and is an important ornithological site.
Culture and Local History
The Chapel of St. Mark was built in 1776 on the site of an older late-Baroque wooden structure. It has an elliptical nave with a semicircular apse; its furnishings include a Rococo high altar and a Rococo pulpit. The chapel has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958.
At the foot of the path to the Cholenice cemetery stands a stone cross. Cholenice was also once home to an amateur theatre group founded in 1909, which was known for its theatrical activities not only in the Jičín area.
Festival Traditions
Ples pod cylindrem is a traditional ball with a long history. The event takes place every year and begins with a ceremonial procession of men wearing top hats. It includes a participatory baptism ritual: men and women can be baptised if they arrange for a godmother or godfather to hold a top hat over the head of the person being baptised.
