Hvozdnice: Holiday Apartments and Houses

Hvozdnice lies on the southern slope of a gentle hill, 9 km west of Hradec Králové. The village is surrounded by orchards on three sides and by forest to the north.

Location and Landscape

Fruit growing has a tradition in Hvozdnice dating back to the period before the First World War. Initially, mainly cherries and sour cherries were cultivated. After the Second World War, the local agricultural cooperative considerably expanded the orchards; since then, other types of fruit, especially apples, have also been grown there.

The surrounding area's bodies of water include Horní Renešák, the middle one of three bodies of water. They probably date back to the 16th century, although an earlier origin cannot be ruled out. Horní Renešák served fish farming for Libčany Chateau and, above all, powered the Hvozdnický mlýn mill.

History and Culture

The first written records of settlement in Hvozdnice date from 1073. By 2017, archaeologists from the museum in Hradec Králové had excavated more than 150 graves in Hvozdnice. The Mohylník Hvozdnice archaeological burial mound site lies in the cadastral area of Libčany but is traditionally associated more closely with Hvozdnice.

The former Hvozdnický mlýn watermill stands on the southwestern edge of the municipality of Hvozdnice and is not accessible. It was built around 1573 by Václav Nejedlý, owner of the Libčany estate and son of Petr Nejedlý from Vysoká.

Paths and Places

The educational trail “Cesta do minulosti Libčan a Hvozdnic” leads from Libčany to Hvozdnice near Hradec Králové in eastern Bohemia, with six stops and six information panels. It guides visitors through the history of the two municipalities and also focuses on unique archaeological finds.

The Lesní altán Hvozdnice forest pavilion has been renovated and supplemented with a rope centre for children and an information panel about the history of the place. It is located between Hvozdnice and Libčany in Zádušní les near Libušina studánka and offers a pleasant place to stop and relax.

Hvozdnice also has a new multi-purpose sports court for tennis, volleyball, football tennis, small-sided football and basketball.
