Kunčice is characterised by a villagescape where historical traces, protected nature, paths and leisure activities come together.

History and Culture

Kunčice was first mentioned as a settlement as early as 1382. A stone water castle once stood at the highest point of the village; it was protected by the Bystřice River and included an estate farm. Kunčice Fortress was converted into a single-storey Baroque chateau in 1721.

Opposite the chapel stands a Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1830. Next to the chapel, a sandstone pyramid commemorates the Prussian-Austrian War of 1866.

Nature and Water

The Bystřice Nature Monument encompasses a section of the middle course of the Bystřice with typical riverside trees and shrubs. This nature monument actively protects the habitat of the highly endangered and significant mussel species in Europe, the thick-shelled river mussel (Unio crassus).

There are six ponds in the surroundings of Kunčice. The Kunčické rybníky are a group of three bodies of water on an unnamed stream that rises in the Obora forest. Notable trees in Kunčice include protected pedunculate oaks, which occur there in unusually large numbers.

Architecture and Park

Nearby, the park of Hrádek u Nechanic Chateau was laid out in 1844 according to a design by L. Krüger. Originally, the park covered 29 hectares; today, it covers approximately 18 hectares. A circular path leads through it, offering views of the chateau standing on a gentle rise.

Also nearby, the basic tour of Hrádek u Nechanic Chateau presents the aristocracy’s residential culture in the second half of the 19th century, as well as the Harrach family’s reception rooms on the ground floor, in the originally furnished and richly decorated interiors.

Leisure

Around 1850, Betlach bought the Baroque chateau and its associated estate farm from Count Harrach; the farm was subsequently called Betlachův statek. The reconstructed farm serves as a leisure centre in Kunčice.

The Rosnička children’s club offers a morning programme without parental accompaniment. The children’s club includes an equipped playroom, a large gym for promoting physical activity and an outdoor playground.

Paths

A green-marked hiking trail from Prasek to Hrádek runs through Kunčice. The route from Nechanice to Hrádek u Nechanic via Zvíkov and Kunčice reaches the village centre of Kunčice after 8.4 km and then continues through the local forest towards the chateau.
