Culture and History

The permanent exhibition “Cesty města” traces the history of Hradec Králové from prehistoric times to the First Republic and uses multimedia interactive elements. Another part of the exhibition explores the lives of Hradec Králové’s residents during the period when the city was a bastioned military fortress, up to the war of 1866. A further section presents Hradec Králové as one of the oldest legally recognized cities and explains the city’s urban development from the 13th to the 16th century.

At the Gallery of Modern Art in Hradec Králové, the permanent exhibition “České umění 20. století a jeho škatulky” examines the categories used to classify 20th-century Czech art. The digital planetarium building also houses the interactive exhibition “Mikrosvět – makrosvět”.

Architecture

The original and diverse buildings designed by the architects Josef Gočár and Jan Kotěra earned Hradec Králové the nickname “Salon of the Republic”. The Gočár Staircase was built in 1909–1910 and is an important work of modern architecture in Hradec Králové.

The Renaissance Bílá věž is 72 metres high and offers views from its gallery over Hradec Králové as well as the distant peaks of the Giant Mountains and the Orlické Mountains. Bílá věž also offers an interactive tour with modern audiovisual elements.

Landscape

Hradec Králové is set in an attractive landscape at the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers.

The Biřička pond lies south of Hradec Králové in the Nový Hradec area and is used for walking, cycling and swimming in summer. The pond and the surrounding forests can be reached from the centre of Hradec Králové by public transport on lines 1 or 2.
