Culture and History

The basilica in Tismice is a Romanesque three-nave basilica dating from the 12th century. Its western façade has two towers; the northern tower houses the oldest surviving bell in the Kolín region, cast in 1442. Its southern wall contains a Gothic side portal dating from the mid-15th century. The site also includes a mortuary and numerous historic gravestones.

The Tismice hillfort is one of the oldest early medieval fortified settlements in the wider region and played a central role in the 8th and 9th centuries. The largest concentration of Avar-type finds in Bohemia is located at the hillfort. The municipal library in Tismice houses archaeological finds from the local Slavic hillfort. From the village centre, the Tismice hillfort can be reached in about five minutes via a green-marked hiking trail; from there, you can enjoy a view of the basilica in Tismice.

Landscape and Trails

Tismice lies in the valley of the Bušinec stream. The walk from the elevated plain near Nová Ves into the valley of the Tismice stream takes about fifteen minutes.

Cycling

The project “REGIONEM S VĚTREM V ZÁDECH”, implemented by the municipality of Tismice, connects new cycle paths with existing routes. Wherever possible, the new cycle paths run along quiet local and public roads in the area around Český Brod and Úvaly.
