Ostrov u Tochovic is located along an important pilgrimage route.

History

Ostrov appears in a tax register of the Archdiocese of Příbram dating from 1379. After the Hussite Wars, the village passed to a Benedictine monastery on an island in the Vltava at the confluence of the Vltava and Sázava rivers. Silver mining developed in the vicinity of Ostrov, yielding unusually high returns for that time; its heyday lasted until 1574.

Sacred Heritage

Ostrov u Tochovic has traditionally and historically been associated with Svatá Hora in Příbram and the Christian faith. The roads through Ostrov are lined with religious buildings, wayside shrines, and crosses. A wayside shrine at the village site of Ostrov dates from 1852 and was restored and blessed in 2011.

The cross in Koletiny stands on the cadastral boundary between Lazsko and Ostrov and is registered as the property of the municipality of Ostrov. It was erected by the stonemason Jan Krotký, who lived in Ostrov at house no. 7. The site in Koletiny served as the final stop when accompanying the deceased from Ostrov to Slivice for the parish church, as well as on pilgrimages to Svatá Hora near Příbram.

The cross in Zárybniční was restored in 2013; its date of origin is unknown.

Landscape and Historical Traces

The gold-bearing Ostrovský potok flows through Ostrov. Spoil heaps and earthworks along it are associated with former gold-washing activities. The “Fluchtštola” is probably dated to the 16th century and leads into the courtyard of the Grunt Knottkowského.

Transport

Ostrov u Tochovic railway station is located on railway line 200 between Beroun and Protivín. Access to the station building or to the shelter at Ostrov u Tochovic station, which protects travellers from the weather, is barrier-free.
