Libice Nad Cidlinou: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Libice nad Cidlinou combines a rich history with a distinctive river and floodplain landscape. The Slavník stronghold was established at the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries; in the second half of the 10th century, it became the centre of a principality ruled by the Slavníkovci. The Kolín–Prague railway line also passes through the town.

History and Culture

The Slavník stronghold included a mint, a stone church and a princely palace. The archaeological site displays the foundations of a church, a palace and a gate tower, as well as information panels on the history of Libice. The acropolis of the Libice nad Cidlinou stronghold is now designated a national cultural monument.

The Pamětní síň slavníkovské Libice presents the history of the region from the beginnings of Slavic settlement in the 6th century to the demise of the stronghold in the 12th century. It also covers the medieval and modern history of Libice nad Cidlinou. The Památník pod hradištěm uses several mosaic panels that depict selected finds and summarise the history of the stronghold in several languages.

The local history also includes various religious and commemorative sites. The Evangelical Church in Libice nad Cidlinou was completed at the end of 1895 and solemnly opened in May 1896. It is a Neo-Renaissance church, still serves its original purpose and remains one of the defining landmarks of Libice nad Cidlinou. The grounds of St Adalbert's Church lie on the southern edge of the town and include a cemetery enclosed by a wall with a Renaissance entrance tower. A Jan Hus monument stands on the village square in front of the municipal office, commemorating Jan Hus.

Nature

The Cidlina River flows through Libice nad Cidlinou and joins the Elbe near the town. The Libický luh lies at the confluence of the Elbe and Cidlina between Libice nad Cidlinou and Velký Osek. The area is designated a national nature reserve and protects alluvial forests, floodplain meadows, wetlands, and habitats of rare and endangered plant and animal species.

Characteristic habitats in the Libický luh include old branches of the Elbe, cut-off channels and meadows formed through silting. Kingfishers can be found around the Bačovka and the cut-off channels in the Libický luh.

Things to Do

The Naučná stezka Libice educational trail runs from the confluence of the Labe and Cidlina via the stronghold and Libice nad Cidlinou to the road bridge over the Cidlina. One of the trail's stations focuses on the flora and fauna of the alluvial forest.

The CKH12 cycling route “Za Slavníkovci” leads to Libice nad Cidlinou, is mostly flat and runs through alluvial forests along the Labe.
