Kňovice: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
The grounds of Kňovice Castle are located in the village center of Kňovice. The Baroque castle was built in the period following the Battle of White Mountain and acquired its present appearance in the 19th century through a pseudo-Gothic redesign.
Culture
The Baroque Chapel of St. Joseph stands in the castle park opposite the southern façade of the castle. It was built in the castle park between 1729 and 1731. The park is enclosed by a stone perimeter wall with two gates.
The portrait “Josefína” by Josef Mánes is also associated with the place: it is reportedly considered a portrait of his maid Františka “Fanynka” Šťovíčková, who was born in Kňovice.
History
The former Kňovice fortress was first mentioned in 1542. A dramatic chapter followed on October 31, 1943: Kňovice was forcibly incorporated into the Waffen-SS Benešov military training area. After 1945, the residents returned to their homes.
Two stone flat axes found in Kňovice are considered evidence that the area was settled as early as pre-Slavic times.
Getting Around
A yellow-marked hiking trail runs through Kňovice. Cycle Route 8135 leads from Příčov via Kňovice to a crossroads near Nová Ves.
