Nature

At Chotilsko, the Vltava now forms the water surface of the Slapy Reservoir. The Slapy Reservoir led to the creation of several recreational areas along the flooded Vltava Valley. The lookout tower on Veselý vrch near Mokrsko is a 42-metre-high steel tower. Its observation platform is 25 metres above the ground; the tower is reached via 137 steps and offers views across the landscape along the Vltava to the blue bends of Lake Slapy.

The Vymyšlenská Pěšina Nature Reserve protects warm, rocky slopes with dwarf oak forests and rocky steppe on the left bank of the Vltava between Smilovice and Kobylníky. The Vymyšlenská Pěšina educational trail runs along the edge of the nature reserve of the same name.

Culture

The Špýchar Museum in Prostřední Lhota is housed in a four-storey Baroque building dating from 1770. It presents the life of the rural population of the central Vltava region in the 19th and 20th centuries. The archaeological section of the exhibition covers the region's early history in connection with the mining and processing of gold.

Chotilsko is home to a permanent exhibition entitled „The History of the Old Vltava“. The exhibition covers the stretch of the river from Zvírotice to the former Svatojánské Rapids, occupies approximately 200 square metres and is also accessible to wheelchair users. The exhibition building also houses a museum of balloon flight.

History

The Drtinova Lookout Tower was rebuilt in 2014 on the foundations of its previously damaged predecessor. The wooden structure has a covered observation platform 21 metres above the ground and is reached via 109 steps. From a height of 20 metres, it offers views of the landscape of the central Vltava region.

The Prof. PhDr. František Drtina educational trail was marked out in Chotilsko in memory of its namesake. It provides information about the life and work of František Drtina. The Zlaté Psí hory educational trail offers insights into the regional history of gold mining through old and new mining facilities.

The Church of Saint Fabian and Saint Sebastian in Živohošť is one of the oldest ecclesiastical monuments in the region. It was originally Romanesque, converted to the Gothic style in the 14th century and remodelled in the Pseudo-Romanesque style in 1860. The church is located at the beginning or end of European cycle route No. 7, the Vltava Route.

Orientation

The TEPfactor site in Chotilsko is being permanently closed and relocated abroad; reservations are accepted in Prague. The Museum of Rural Life in Prostřední Lhota can be reached from the II/102 main road, via the Zlaté Psí hory educational trail and along a blue-marked hiking trail.
