The Podbrdské Museum in Rožmitál pod Třemšínem includes a memorial dedicated to Jakub Jan Ryba and the Czech Christmas Mass. At the same time, it is a modern, accessible museum complex.
Culture and History
In Starý Rožmitál, the Parish Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross has an organ dating from 1750, which Jakub Jan Ryba played from 1788 to 1815. His famous Czech Christmas Mass “Hej, mistře” was probably first performed in the same church in 1796.
The Parish Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is the town’s oldest sight and also the oldest surviving building, as well as one of the oldest monuments in the region. Together with the gate, rectory and chaplaincy, it forms a protected cultural monument.
The originally Baroque Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk was rebuilt in 1904–1905 by the architect Josef Fanta in the Neo-Baroque style. The Town Church of Saint John of Nepomuk dominates the square in the former outer bailey area, which today forms an urban conservation area.
Rožmitál Castle was originally a water castle and dates from the mid-13th century. Johanka of Rožmitál, the wife of Jiří of Poděbrady and Queen of Bohemia, was probably born there.
Museums and Castle
House No. 74 is home to the Cvokařské Museum, housed in a former nail-making workshop and open from spring to autumn. A visit to the Cvokařské Museum can be combined with a walk from the parish church along the avenue by Podzámecký Pond.
Rožmitál Castle is open during cultural events and every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the summer season.
