Veli Brgud: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Veli Brgud is a rural cultural heritage complex with presumed medieval origins. Historically, the settlement was associated with livestock grazing, forestry, agriculture and viticulture. Its building stock includes older stone farm buildings, as well as houses ranging from simple medieval single-storey structures to more complex examples from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Culture

The Brgujski zvončari and mačkare association was founded in 1998 to preserve the local bell-ringer and mummer traditions. In 2009, the Brgujski zvončari were recognised as representatives of the intangible cultural heritage of the world. During Carnival, the procession of the Brgujski zvončari and maškare passes through the surrounding settlements on the penultimate Sunday of Carnival. It consists of three groups: adult bell-ringers, child bell-ringers and masked performers.

The churches also shape the traditional history of the settlement. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been protected as a cultural asset since 2005 and is listed among the protected cultural assets of Veli Brgud. The small Church of Saint Nicholas was built in the late Gothic tradition, dates from the 16th century and is considered the oldest surviving building in Veli Brgud. It was first mentioned in written records in 1666. Historically, before Easter it was a pilgrimage destination for people from Kastav; one of three processions led to Brgud.

In Štambulija, a small replica of a lime kiln called Japlenica was built in 2017. It can be seen when visiting Veli Brgud. The local speech belongs to the Munski dialect group within the Čakavian dialect area.

Trails and Landscape

Tourist Board cycling route 118, entitled Saka noć ima svoju moć, runs through Veli Brgud. A water tap provided by Matulji Aqua Oasis is also available in Veli Brgud for hikers, cyclists and passers-by.

The Do Studenca trail is 1,800 metres long; the easy walk to Studenac takes about 30 minutes. The trail is also suitable for cycling. Studenac itself is a large walled pond next to a small spring. The Veli Brgud–Šapjane hiking route is 3,800 metres long and is classified as moderate to difficult; it is also suitable for cycling. For road cycling, there is the 32-kilometre Veli Brgud–Male Mune–Veli Brgud route.

Local Flavours

Brgujski kapuz is a distinctive purple cabbage with a strongly peppery flavour.
