Pitve: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture and History

The Church of Saint James is registered as an individual cultural asset under the Croatian register number Z-6582. The church is a historicist building constructed in the Late Gothic style; historical documents first mentioned the Church of Saint James the Apostle in 1452.

The history of the village also includes the Vinogradarska Collection. It comprises traditional tools for work in the fields, vineyards, and konoba, equipment for wine production and storage, as well as traditional kitchen utensils. The collection is a permanent museum exhibition of the Jelsa Municipal Museum and was established after the building and the collection were restored.

The Pitve wine collection presents rural life, winegrowing, and winemaking on Hvar as part of the island’s culture and identity.

Tradition

Pitve is one of six central settlements on Hvar that take part in the Za-Križen procession. This tradition has been observed for more than 500 years. On the evening of Maundy Thursday, the procession sets out from Pitve and five other settlements, visits the parish churches in all six villages, and returns to its home church at daybreak on Good Friday. The procession through Pitve covers 25 kilometres in around eight hours.

The paved lanes of Pitve offer views of the stonework of the historic settlement. In Lower Pitve, the Chapel of Saint Roch was extensively renovated inside and out in 2011. Prayer gatherings and special celebrations in honour of Saint Roch and Our Lady of the Snows are held there occasionally.

Landscape and Activities

Zlatni Rat Beach is located in the surrounding area of Pitve. Otok Šćedro is also located in the surrounding area. Otočić Zečevo and the island of Hvar are near Pitve. The Spanish Fortress lies in the wider regional area.

For cyclists, the OVER THE TOP route passes through Pitve towards the Pitve-Zavala Tunnel. It forms part of a 23.09-kilometre route consisting of asphalt and macadam.

Cuisine

Olive groves and vineyards grow in the cultivated fields around Pitve. After the harvests, the residents produce wine and olive oil. At Konoba Dvor Duboković in Pitve, the menu includes dishes prepared under a baking lid, grilled and stewed fish, risotto, pašticada with homemade gnocchi, wines from the family cellar, and homemade liqueurs.
