Humac: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Humac is protected in Croatia as a rural cultural heritage ensemble. The village’s present form dates from the 17th century, while the settlement was founded as early as the 13th century.
Culture and History
Humac consists of 140 small houses, almost all built of stone. In communal courtyards, the historic houses preserve rain gutters, grape presses and bread ovens. For centuries, the cottages served as seasonal homes for the owners from Vrisnik while they cultivated their fields.
The Jelsa District Museum includes a winery collection in Humac that is open to visitors. The restored parish church of Saints John and Paul was built at the beginning of the 20th century and is surrounded by cypresses.
Nature and Sky
Grapčeva Cave, with its stalactites and stalagmites, is located near Humac. It has been protected as a geomorphological natural monument since 1964; regular guided tours of the cave are offered during the summer months.
A telescope on a small hill outside Humac offers magnified views of Hvar’s seascapes and landscapes, Brač and the mainland. The lack of street lighting supports stargazing; in 2020, the settlement was selected as a site for a meteor camera.
Cycling
The NA-VRH cycling route passes through Humac. Over 23.9 kilometres, it connects Jelsa, Pitve, Martinica and Humac. The HUMAC cycling route is a 32-kilometre loop starting and ending in Humac and combining paved and gravel roads.
Geographical Location
Humac is located near State Road 116, which crosses the centre of the island of Hvar between Sućuraj and Hvar and passes through Jelsa and Stari Grad.
