Culture, from processions to viticulture and history

The Following the Cross Gallery is located in the bell tower of the parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Jelsa and opened on 1 July 2026. It displays artefacts contributed by communities from the six villages involved in the procession: Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirče, Vrbanj and Vrboska. Guided storytelling tours between 18:00 and 21:00 explore the history, symbolism and distinctive features of the Following the Cross Procession. The focus is therefore on both objects from the villages and the history of the procession itself.

The viticulture museum in the village of Pitve, 2 km from Jelsa, offers another insight into the past. It is an independent collection of the Museum of the Municipality of Jelsa. On display are traditional tools used for work in the vineyards, as well as equipment for making and storing wine. In Humac, meanwhile, a small museum houses tools and mementos from everyday life in the past.

Historic buildings also offer different points of interest: Galešnik is a Late Antique fortress dating from the 6th century. Tor refers to the remains of a small hillfort and a historic watchtower on a hill southeast of, and above, Jelsa. On the Glavice peninsula, Kaštilac fortress stands at the highest point; since 2012, it has been listed as a cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia. Vrboska is known as the “Little Venice” of Croatia because of its small bridges.

Exploring on foot, by bike and on Šćedro

One option for a circular cycling tour is the Na Vrh route: it starts in Jelsa, goes via Pitve and Humac, and returns to Jelsa. If you prefer a route between two places, consider the Nordic walking route between Jelsa and Pitve. It is 8 km long, of moderate difficulty and takes about two and a half hours. Šćedro belongs to the Municipality of Jelsa and was designated a significant landscape in 1972. The island has an indented coastline and vegetation typical of Mediterranean forest and maquis communities. Signposted trails make it possible to explore Šćedro on foot. In Mostir Bay are the ruins of a Dominican monastery, built at the end of the 15th century and abandoned in the 18th century, as well as the Church of Gospe od Milosrđa. Here, landscape and historic buildings come together, while the island’s natural environment is not reduced to a single point of interest.

Local life and choosing where to stay

Jelsa’s Pjaca, officially the Square of the Croatian National Revival, has cafés, ice-cream parlours, restaurants and small shops, and is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists. The port of Jelsa has 54 berths for yachts, motor yachts and catamarans. These local features add a distinct sense of the centre and harbour to the cultural and active options. For a museum visit, on the other hand, the location of the viticulture museum in Pitve is relevant; it is 2 km from Jelsa.
