Culture

In the center of Nevesinje stands the Cathedral Church of the Holy Ascension. It was built from 1879 to 1886, completed in 1886, and is one of the national cultural monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Also located in the historic urban area is the clock tower, the Sahat-kula, in the center of the old Čaršija. It was built before 1664 and is now considered the oldest structure of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

At the western edge of the town stands the Careva Mosque on a slightly elevated plateau. It has been included among the national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a site, together with the surviving remains of an architectural ensemble. At the same time, it is considered the oldest and largest Islamic religious building erected in Herzegovina during Ottoman rule. In Krekovi near Nevesinje, Kalufi is listed under the designation 1504-003 as part of the medieval stećci burial sites.

The Nevesinje City Gallery was officially opened in May 2013 with an exhibition by the academic painter Radmila Lizdek. It is located in the former JNA hall on Blagoje-Parović Square in the center of Nevesinje. The “Nebojša Glogovac” Cultural Center offers theater performances, concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, workshops and educational programs. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Kifino Selo is also located in the surrounding area and is considered the oldest medieval church in Nevesinje.

Nature

Lake Alagovac is located about 4 kilometers north of Nevesinje at the foot of Mount Velež. Depending on the season, visitors can camp, swim, row and fish there. Novakuša presents a different type of landscape: The cave is a natural monument below a stone amphitheater whose vertical walls are up to 100 meters high in places. Its entrance is 70 meters wide and 20 meters high, leading into a large chamber with vertical and horizontal passages beyond it.

Provalija Cave is located about 500 meters from the Nevesinje–Gacko main road and can be reached via the bed of the Surdup stream. The Zalomka also reflects the area's distinctive karst conditions: During a large part of its summer course, it flows as an underground river.

Landscape

Mount Velež features traces of glaciation, a glacial lake and numerous underground karst formations. In addition, 62 different climbing routes have been completed on the mountain. Mount Crvanj is particularly suitable for hiking, collecting medicinal plants, hunting and excursion tourism.

Morine, also known as Hercegovački Tibet, is the largest mountain plateau and grazing land in the municipality of Nevesinje and covers approximately 5,000 hectares. Morine is still home to actively used livestock-herding katuns, where life continues much as it did several centuries ago. Nevesinjsko polje is one of the largest karst fields in Bosnia and Herzegovina and covers 18,000 hectares.

Activities

Every year in August, the traditional sports, cultural and tourism event Nevesinjska olimpijada takes place in Bratački lug in the surroundings of Nevesinje. At Vjenčac, southeast of the present-day town, lies the medieval Vjenčac Fortress; massive walls of the military fortification have survived. A wooden church dedicated to Saint George also stands there, with cascading platforms, water features and a viewpoint.

A preserved Roman route approximately 500 meters long has been documented in the vicinity of Nevesinje, leading directly to the Ovčiji brod sheep bridge. At NOA Morine, the activities on offer include quad bikes, motocross bikes and off-road vehicles.
