Holiday apartment in Ugljevik: Nature, Culture and History

Ugljevik combines distinctive natural formations with cultural sites, reminders of its industrial heritage and lively events. Šuplja Stijena is a geomorphological rock opening approximately 20 metres long and up to three metres high. It is frequently visited by nature lovers, hikers and mountaineers. Signposts and tourist information boards have been installed on the Kose Trail above Ugljevik. The tourist surroundings of Ugljevik also include the Hajduk-Novak Cave in Krćina.

Nature and Leisure

Borova Šuma is located not far from the centre of Ugljevik. There are numerous marked hiking trails there that are suitable for walkers and cyclists. Borova Šuma is also suitable for sports and recreational tourism. In addition, fishing is practised in the municipality of Ugljevik at Lake Mezgraja. The “Rudar” Sports and Recreation Centre manages swimming pools and a sports hall.

The various landscape and leisure destinations each represent their own form of activity: Šuplja Stijena is visited by people interested in nature, hiking and mountaineering, while Borova Šuma offers marked trails for walkers and cyclists. Lake Mezgraja is located within the municipality and is associated with fishing. On the Kose Trail above the town, signposts and tourist information boards complement the available orientation aids.

Culture and History

The “Filip Višnjić” Cultural Centre houses an ethnographic local-history collection containing 220 traditional objects. The building is a replica of the former building of the “Ugljevik” mine in Stari Ugljevik. The cultural centre hosts concerts, theatre performances, literary evenings and academies.

In front of the cultural centre, on the square in Ugljevik, stands the famous “Ćiro” steam locomotive, which operated on the Mezgraja–Ugljevik–Bijeljina route and transported passengers and coal. Today, the locomotive is a popular photo subject in the square in front of the “Filip Višnjić” Cultural Centre. The “Ugljevik 2026” art colony is also part of the cultural scene: its twelfth edition opened in 2026.

The tourist surroundings of Ugljevik include Jablan grad, a fortress built in the Middle Ages. Today, only scant traces of the former town and its life remain there. A special religious site is the Monastery of Saint Alexander Nevsky. It is the only place of worship in Bosnia and Herzegovina built by Russians, and it was under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate.

Local Traditions

The plum, fruit brandy and honey fair traditionally takes place every year at the end of August or the beginning of September. At the fair, visitors can experience the exhibitors’ local products as well as an extensive cultural and artistic programme. Alongside the natural and cultural sites, regional products and a festive event in Ugljevik’s annual calendar are therefore also part of the offering.
