Holiday apartment in Prnjavor: Culture, “Little Europe” and Drenova Lake

Prnjavor is home to sacred, historical and cultural landmarks, as well as opportunities for observing wildlife by the water. The Ukrainian Church of the Transfiguration was built between 1911 and 1912 and is considered the first brick-built Ukrainian church in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its interior is designed in the traditional Ukrainian style and features a multi-tiered wooden iconostasis in the Neo-Baroque style. The parish complex also includes a museum displaying objects brought by settlers and other historical treasures.

Culture

Prnjavor is also home to the Orthodox Church of Saint George the Great Martyr. It was built between 1884 and 1887 and consecrated on 18 September 1888. The associated iconostasis was made and painted in 1888 by Teodosije Marković. The courtyard of Prnjavor’s town mosque was declared a national monument in 2003 and placed under state protection. Another designated building is the District Prefecture in Prnjavor, which is designated as the Zavičajni muzej Prnjavor.

In Palačkovci stands a log church built in 1843 entirely from oak wood. The history of the region also includes the “Vučijak” Lipizzaner Stud Farm: it was established in April 1946 by a decree of the Ministry of Defence and has six Lipizzaner breeding lines.

History and Diversity

The Prnjavor region is characterised by ethnic diversity and is known as “Little Europe” because of the numerous peoples and nationalities living there. This name is also part of the name of the international “Little Europe” minority festival held by the Municipality of Prnjavor. Cultural and artistic institutions from throughout Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as from countries in the region and the countries of origin of minorities, take part, including the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy and Ukraine.

The minority festival presents traditional crafts and specialities from the traditional cuisines of the participating countries. In this way, the festival combines cultural and artistic contributions with the craft and culinary traditions of the participating communities.

Water and Nature

Fishing on Drenova Lake is carried out from the shore; every other form of fishing is prohibited. The lake is a special fishing area and is widely known for its large catfish and carp.

In mid-August, a special phenomenon occurs on and above the Ukrina: swarms of mayflies appear in the evening and morning hours. An existing 18-kilometre-long path leads from Drenova Lake to the historic Stuplje Monastery.
