Kozarska Dubica on the Una: Culture, Nature and Cycling Routes

Kozarska Dubica lies on the banks of the Una and on the slopes of Mount Kozara. The banks of the Una are meeting places for people who love nature, while Blato Beach is one of the public and private bathing areas on the Una in Kozarska Dubica. The location on the river and on the slopes of Kozara defines the town’s geographical setting.

Landscape

Mlječanica is a specialised facility for physical medicine and rehabilitation at a spring. Another landscape landmark is the Donja Gradina Memorial Site: it covers 117 hectares and lies on the right bank of the Sava. The memorial site includes an open-air museum intended to preserve the authenticity of the site with as little intervention in the surrounding area as possible.

Culture and History

Kozarska Dubica has buildings from the 20th century as well as modern architecture from the 21st century. Svetosavska Street, formerly Kralja Aleksandra Street, has largely retained its authenticity. The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is one of the sights in Kozarska Dubica.

The National Library of Kozarska Dubica exhibits the Boško Šiljegović legacy as well as books, magazines, art images and graphic works from the local heritage collection. The permanent exhibition also includes a lithograph by Pablo Picasso from the Boško Šiljegović legacy.

In the vicinity of Kozarska Dubica, Moštanica Monastery lies 12 kilometres south of the town centre beside the Moštanica stream. The first written records of the monastery date back to 1579. Every year on 19 August, the Transfiguration of the Lord is celebrated there with “Veče ojkače”, an antiphonal singing tradition of folk songs.

Water and Regattas

The three-day international Una Regatta passes through Kozarska Dubica. In the Dubička Regatta, participants travel by boat from Johova to Blato Beach on the Una. Traditionally, this regatta ends at Blato Beach with games, dinner and entertainment.

Getting Around

The 39.5-kilometre Mrakovica–Donja Gradina Memorial Trail runs through the surroundings of Kozarska Dubica and is also suitable for cyclists. Another route is the 30-kilometre Kozara cycling route. It connects Kozarska Dubica, Moštanica Monastery and Kozara National Park. The route is signposted throughout with blue cycling signs, waymarkers and panels showing a route map.

The section between Kozara National Park and Moštanica Monastery has four rest areas and three drinking-water springs. This brings together different points of interest along the same route: the town, the monastery and the national park.

Wine and Cuisine

In the surroundings of Kozarska Dubica, the Banjac family’s rural household in the village of Klekovci offers its own white wine as well as traditional cuisine featuring cured meat, baked goods, cottage cheese and homemade fruit juice. The household welcomes groups by prior arrangement and has a tasting room for up to 50 visitors.

Podrum Panić winery is located on the north-western slopes of Kozara in the municipality of Kozarska Dubica and belongs to the Kozara wine region. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon grow in the Panić vineyard; high-quality wines are produced and matured from these varieties in the cellar.
