Discover Staro Rudo: History on the Lim and Remembrance
Staro Rudo brings together the history of a former settlement with the Lim River and places of remembrance. A holiday apartment in Staro Rudo therefore offers you a stay in which historic buildings, religious traditions and local remembrance provide different ways to experience the place. The main points of reference are its founding in 1555, the old Kasaba Rudo and the events of the great flood of 1896.
Staro Rudo and the Lim
Staro Rudo was founded in 1555 as a charitable foundation of Mustafa Pasha Sokolović. The historic settlement included a bazaar with craft workshops and shops. Mustafa Pasha Sokolović had the Lim crossed by a magnificent five-arched bridge. During the great flood from 9 to 10 November 1896, the Lim River swept the old Kasaba Rudo away from its left bank. Thus, the history of the town brings together its founding, trade, bridge building and profound change along the river.
Mausoleums, Turbe and Remembrance
There are two mausoleums in Staro Rudo. One of them was the mausoleum of an unknown dervish near the Mustafa Bey Sokolović Mosque in Staro Rudo. It was a closed, vaulted mausoleum from the 16th century—a small stone turbe of the closed type beneath a wooden roof. The structure stood in the southern part of the courtyard of the Mustafa Pasha Mosque and was submerged in the great flood during the night of 10 to 11 November 1896. The Staro Rudo Memorial Center was erected in memory of 101 victims of the past war. One turbe in Staro Rudo bears the names of civilian victims from this area. One turbe is located in the cemetery in Staro Rudo.
The Day of Remembrance on 24 August
The day of remembrance for 101 victims takes place every year on 24 August and includes a flower ceremony at the Staro Rudo Memorial Center. The commemorative event includes laying flowers in front of a plaque bearing the names of the victims. As part of the commemoration, a walk leads from the local mosque to the bridge over the Lim; roses are symbolically released into the Lim along the way. The event is organized by the “Medžlis Islamske zajednice Rudo” together with the victims’ families. If you visit the place on this date, you can plan your trip around this fixed commemorative occasion.
