Culture
Popovi’s memorial trail, Staza velikana, features marble plaques commemorating eight important Serbian figures. There is also a bust of a prince in the centre of the village. Popovi is also home to one of the oldest reading rooms in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Orthodox Church of the Nativity of Christ in Popovi was built between 1991 and 1993. Another distinctive feature of the village is the first rural public bath in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Popovi’s public bath opened in 1924.
History
Popovi was first mentioned in 1548 in an Ottoman tax register. In the 1548 entry, the settlement is called Zvonaš Selište. A register from 1600 lists Popovi under the name Prokac Bijeljina. Thus, different historical names for the village appear in the surviving records.
Rural Character
A black mulberry tree stands at the highest point of Popovi and is considered the oldest tree in Semberija. According to oral tradition, Prince Ivo tied his horse to this black mulberry tree in the centre of Popovi, at the highest point of the village.
Equestrian sport is also one of the local features mentioned. The riding school at Ranch Tanasić in Popovi offers lessons for beginners as well as opportunities for extreme riding. Traditional horse races are held in Popovi during Poklade.
Food and Events
The Stanišići Ethno Village includes two authentic watermills from 1937 and 1917, which are still in use. Flour for the flatbreads served in the restaurant is still milled in these watermills. Next to the monk’s house, a stone amphitheatre with 380 seats is located by a lake for open-air cultural events.
On the banks of the Drina, the gastronomic and tourist complex Drinska ruža is located in the immediate vicinity of the Pavlović Bridge. It is 12 km from Bijeljina. The address is Drina BB, Popovi 2.
