Srebrenica combines impressive nature with Roman traces, medieval sites, exhibitions and vibrant events. The “Drina” National Park particularly shapes the character of the municipality of Srebrenica: It covers around 6,300 hectares within the municipality of Srebrenica and is known for the Drina Canyon, viewpoints and rare Pančić spruce trees.

Nature

The “Drina” National Park provides a habitat for bears, deer and eagles. At the same time, it is geared towards nature visits, hiking and relaxation in an unspoiled environment. Another landscape can be found at Guber, an excursion destination and promenade at an altitude of 560 metres near Srebrenica. The 2.5-kilometre-long Guber promenade leads through untouched coniferous and deciduous forests; several healing springs are located along its route. The Banja Guber area was declared a climatic health resort by a decision of the Government of Republika Srpska dated 23 May 2024.

You will also encounter the Drina Canyon at the old town of Klotjevac. This medieval Bosnian fortress lies on a hill near the Drina and offers a view of the river canyon.

Culture and history

The history of Srebrenica stretches far back. Between the 1st and 4th centuries, the Roman settlement of Municipium Malvesiatium stood here, an important administrative and cultural centre of this part of the Roman province. In the 15th century, alongside mining and trade, Srebrenica was an important centre for various crafts; the existence of 15 of the 34 crafts known in Bosnia is documented there.

After the arrival of the Turkish administration, the old town of Srebrenica was built near the present-day town centre. In Skelani, an archaeological site preserves Roman floor mosaics. Near Guber, there is also a cave believed to have served in antiquity as a Roman smelting furnace for ore processing. Traces of a church and a monastery are visible in Klisa. St. Mary’s Church is considered to be a rectangular hall with a right-angled sanctuary.

The Srebrenica Cultural Centre brings together museums, permanent painting exhibitions and the town library. Its permanent exhibitions depict the way of life of the population and the ethnology of the region from prehistoric times onwards. The permanent painting exhibition in the gallery of the Cultural Centre grew out of the First International Artists’ Colony “Srebrenica 2006”.

Memorial site

The Srebrenica Memorial Center presents the permanent exhibitions “Memorial Room – Personal Stories” and “Failure of the International Community”. The “Memento” exhibition combines photography and oral history and presents historical artefacts from genocide survivors and relatives of the victims.

The Srebrenica Memorial Center is open to visitors from 08:00 to 16:00, subject to special circumstances. Visitors are asked to reserve facilities and may request a guided tour by a curator.

“Tvrđava” cycling route

The “Tvrđava” cycling route is 3 kilometres long, has 165 metres of elevation gain and runs over asphalt and earth. A viewpoint along the route offers a view of Srebrenica and the narrow green valley in which the town lies. The route passes the Catholic Church of St. Mary, dating from the 13th century, and the Klisa necropolis.

Events and water

“Dani Srebrenice” is a traditional cultural, artistic, sporting and tourism event held every year from late May to early June. The programme includes concerts, exhibitions, theatre performances, book presentations and sports tournaments.

Srebrenica is also associated with the Pančićeva Regatta, an annual boating event on Lake Perućac. During this regatta, the boats travel upstream on Lake Perućac.
