Lukavica combines specific cultural venues with memorial sites and the wider regional surroundings of Istočno Sarajevo. The “Beli Anđeo” forms the central part of the memorial complex and conveys a universal message of peace. In the heart of Park Sunca in the municipality of Istočno Novo Sarajevo, a memorial complex is being created for Serbian civilians who lost their lives in Sarajevo and the Sarajevo-Romanija region in the 20th century. Visitors to the memorial complex can view information about the victims compiled on digital displays.

Culture

An important local cultural institution is KUD Slavija at 100 Vojvode Radomira Putnika Street in Lukavica. The folklore ensemble performs Serbian dances and songs, particularly from the wider Sarajevo area as well as from other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. Its collection includes six sets of traditional costumes, including several original and authentic examples from the Sarajevo area that are around one hundred years old. KUD Slavija works to preserve traditional dances, songs and customs. The ensemble has presented its work at concerts, showcases and festivals in the former Yugoslavia and abroad.

In the area of the municipality of Istočno Novo Sarajevo, the Istočno Novo Sarajevo Cultural Centre is the leading institution for culture and the arts. It is located at 6 Stefana Nemanje Street in Lukavica and hosts festival programmes featuring competitive monodramas. The book market also brings together numerous publishers and booksellers from Republika Srpska and includes literary gatherings and book presentations. The traditional fifth book market takes place from 18 to 21 August at Trg Republike Srbije as part of the “Ljeto u Istočnom Novom Sarajevu” event.

Events

Trg Republike Srbije is also associated with events for children. Lukavica Sports Hall is likewise located at Trg Republike Srbije. The “Dječiji sajam Istočno Sarajevo” took place there in 2023. The 2024 edition brought together numerous exhibitors from the fields of food, children’s cosmetics, toys and baby equipment, with a focus on learning and sports activities for children. As part of the “Ljeto u Istočnom Sarajevu” event, a traditional children’s masked ball was also held at Trg Republike Srbije in Istočno Novo Sarajevo.

Connections

The Lukavica–Tvrdimići–Jasik regional road directly connects the municipalities of Istočno Novo Sarajevo and Pale. The municipality of Istočno Novo Sarajevo is also connected to Sarajevo Canton via urban roads towards Vraca over the Second Transversal and towards Dobrinja over the Tenth Transversal. As a result, Lukavica’s townscape features both municipal cultural venues and connections to the adjacent municipal area and towards Sarajevo Canton.

Nature

In the wider regional surroundings of Lukavica, the Istočno Sarajevo area offers opportunities for mountain biking on Jahorina, Trebević and Romanija, paragliding, as well as numerous properly marked hiking trails in the region’s mountain ranges. The municipality’s tourism planning highlights, in the wider regional surroundings of Lukavica, the proximity of the Olympic mountains Jahorina, Trebević, Bjelašnica and Igman. Thus, in addition to cultural and event venues, various mountain ranges and activities are available in the town’s regional surroundings.
