Bijeljina combines history, culture and regional life with recurring festivals and diverse connections to the landscape. Distinctive impressions include preserved traces of bygone eras, public events and an open-air gallery of painted building façades that grows from year to year.

Culture

The Museum of Semberija is located in the oldest building in Bijeljina. It has three permanent exhibitions that are open all day, every day. The archaeological exhibition includes material remains from the Neolithic period through the Late Middle Ages. Another special feature is the collection of 23 medieval Cyrillic inscriptions in Church Slavonic.

The Atik Mosque stands in the centre of Bijeljina. It is presumably considered a foundation of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and was restored after 2000. At the same time, it is one of the six official national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Bijeljina.

The Semberija Cultural Centre includes a multipurpose hall with 350 seats and a stage, as well as the city gallery. Film screenings, exhibitions, concerts and theatre performances take place there. The Mural Fest is held in Bijeljina year after year, expanding the open-air gallery there with additional painted building façades.

Among the preserved testimonies to the city’s history is the House of Milenko Atanacković, which still stands in Bijeljina. It was the home of the city’s first academically trained painter. The Bauer House was built in 1909 by one of the best-known merchant families in Bijeljina. The Church of Saint George is also one of the buildings highlighted in Bijeljina. The water tower is considered one of the city’s landmarks.

Events

Bijeljina hosts the international agricultural fair “Interagro”. It has already been held for the 22nd time and brings together numerous exhibitors, farmers and business representatives year after year. The traditional Sava Regatta has a different character: this annual leisure event on the Sava is organised by the Tourism Organisation of the City of Bijeljina.

The Višnjić Days take place in November and commemorate the epic poet Filip Višnjić. The Pantelini Days are celebrated at the beginning of August; they are dedicated to Bijeljina’s patron saint, Saint Panteleimon.

Outdoors

There are 15 cycling routes in the area of the City of Bijeljina. These include the approximately 2.5-kilometre combined pedestrian and cycle path from Bijeljina to Amajlije. Nearby is Etno Selo Stanišići, a visitor complex in traditional style with around twenty authentic wooden houses, a dairy, a water mill, a forge and a granary.

Banja Dvorovi is located 6 kilometres from Bijeljina and offers opportunities for fishing and picnicking on the Drina.

Local Products

The “Dani meda u Semberiji” takes place in the centre of Bijeljina, a traditional recurring honey fair. Honey and other honey products are offered there. Wine also features at public events: the wine fair in Bijeljina was held for the fifth time. Twenty wineries and distilleries, as well as cheese producers, took part.

Cityscape and Landscape

Bijeljina’s city park has existed for more than 100 years. It is one of the largest parks in Republika Srpska and in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The urban area also contains large underground reserves of geothermal water with a temperature of around 75 °C.

Bijeljina is located in the northeast of Republika Srpska at important transport hubs.
