Discover Rudo Polje: Stećci, Nature and Holiday Apartments
Rudo Polje is home to a medieval necropolis with Stećci tombstones. The necropolis of Rudo Polje contains 109 of these tombstones, as well as the remains of a church building from the Late Middle Ages.
Nature
Rudo Polje is one of two newly reported sites of the rare and endangered plant Sternbergia colchiciflora in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Around 50 specimens were observed near Rudo Polje. The plant habitat consists of xerothermic grassland within degraded forests of Quercus petraea and Quercus cerris. Sternbergia colchiciflora is classified as endangered in the regional assessment, but as “Data Deficient” in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its flowering occurs over a short period in the second half of September. For planning purposes, this seasonally narrow natural feature differs from the information on habitat and assessment status. For those interested in nature, the specific flowering period, the habitat, and the two assessments constitute three distinct pieces of information here.
Trails and Local Connections
The local road between Rudo Polje and Srđevići was newly built in 2014 and 2015 on geologically stable ground and serves as a western bypass of the Gacko mine. The road branches in Rudo Polje include M 6.1–Vidojevići, M 6.1–Kovačevići, M 6.1–Groblje, and M 6.1–Gojkovići. The fenced and cultivated area between the Gacko mine and the main road extends to the village of Rudo Polje and is planted with conifers. Rudo Polje is listed as one of the villages of the Second Parish of Gacko; this parish includes settlements along the main road connection between Gacko and Nevesinje. For orientation, road connections, individual road branches, and the higher-level settlement reference can be considered separately. Those who organize local information by scale can view the connection, branches, planted area, and parish reference as different levels.
Culture and History
Lake Klinje is designated as a state-protected cultural and historical monument in the Gacko area. Its arch dam was built during the Austro-Hungarian occupation to irrigate the Gacko karst field. When considering the history, the lake’s protection status and the dating of the dam can be viewed separately.
