Holiday apartment in Novi Grad: Discover rivers, culture and nature

At the entrance to Novi Grad, the Sana flows into the Una. Around this distinctive river junction, a multifaceted urban history comes together with museums, a historic fortress, a long riverside promenade and experiences on the water. There are marked trails in the Novska planina area. At Agrojapra, visitors can grind flour at a watermill, visit exhibitions and taste cold-pressed sunflower and pumpkin seed oil.

Culture

The Museum of Novi Grad preserves the collection of ethnologist Milan Karanović. Its holdings also include a phototype edition of the Miroslav Gospel produced in 1897, an important Cyrillic monument of South Slavic written culture from the 12th century. The City Museum also preserves a copy of the 1280 charter of the noble Babonić family from Blagaj; the original is held in the State Archives in Budapest.

The National Museum, or National Library, of Novi Grad is the city's oldest cultural institution. Literary evenings, book presentations and exhibitions about well-known personalities take place there. Today, the Old Town Hall of Novi Grad, built in 1888 in the pseudo-Moorish style, houses the museum and the tourism organization of the Municipality of Novi Grad. The town hall was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2006.

The legacy of Stojan Ćelić is housed in the City Gallery of Novi Grad. It is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina and comprises 41 works: four oil paintings, six drawings and 31 prints. The legacy of Stojan Ćelić was already declared a national cultural monument in 2005. Another artistic trace is the monument “Majka Partizanka”, created by Marijan Kocković and erected in 1964.

History

The historic Turski Novi Fortress was built from hewn stone starting in 1726. According to the surviving plans, it had walls seven metres high, as well as a moat six metres wide and three metres deep. The complex was 200 metres long and 150 metres wide and had five bastions and two kapikulas, meaning entrance towers.

Water and activity

The Novi Grad city quay is a three-kilometre-long riverside promenade built of stone. It features an avenue of shade-giving chestnut trees and fragrant lime trees. The international Una Regatta takes place on the Una in two stages: from Blatna to Novi Grad and from Novi Grad to Hrvatska Kostajnica.

The Municipality of Novi Grad offers trips in traditional Una boats along a calmer section of the Una. These trips include stops and photo breaks at numerous waterfalls, tufa formations and Una islands. The Novi Grad Sport Fishing Association manages 186 kilometres of waterways and two natural spawning grounds for young trout. Along a one-kilometre section, there are two fishing trails with three types of fishing: float and spinning fishing on the Sana, pike fishing on the Una, and fly-fishing from a boat.

The Mlakve Sports and Recreation Centre has the Sloboda club's football stadium, with seating for 6,000 spectators, and a tennis court. In the Novska planina area, the “Novska Planina” mountaineering association has established and marked 22 kilometres of hiking trails. The 14-kilometre trail race “Roga nije babaroga” has taken place in the natural surroundings of Novska planina since 2017. At the end of May, the Branko Ćopić Trail Marathon is also held, with courses of 42 kilometres and 21 kilometres. There is an outdoor swimming pool at the site of the Lješljani thermomineral spring.

Tradition and taste

As part of Agrojapra rural tourism, visitors can take part in grinding flour at a watermill. In the Japra Valley, Agrojapra has an ethnomuseum exhibition and an exhibition on the cooperative movement. These are complemented by tastings of cold-pressed sunflower oil and pumpkin seed oil.

The House of Podgrmeča and Potkozarja opened in Novi Grad on 11 July 2025 for the sale and promotion of traditional local agricultural products and handicrafts.
